At Jackson County Habitat for Humanity, we believe everyone deserves to live in a safe and comfortable home, especially our aging neighbors who have given so much to their families and communities. That’s why we were honored to kick off this year’s Critical Home Repair season with a meaningful ramp build for a very special community member: Ms. Christian.
Ms. Christian has been aging in place for some time, but after a few recent falls and even a couple of broken bones, it became clear that her home was no longer safely accessible. Her front steps were no longer just an inconvenience; they had become a serious hazard.
When we heard her story, we knew we had to spring into action.
We rallied a team made up of dedicated board members, our current partner family, and passionate community volunteers. With hammers in hand and hearts ready to serve, we spent the weekend constructing a sturdy, accessible ramp to help restore Ms. Christian’s mobility and peace of mind.
The result? A smooth, safe path that allows Ms. Christian to enter and exit her home without fear and with dignity. She was overjoyed with the finished ramp and even more touched by the kindness and warmth of the volunteers who made it happen.
“Everyone was so friendly and did such a great job,” Ms. Christian said with a smile. “I’m just so grateful.”
This is what Critical Home Repair is all about, not just fixing homes, but restoring hope, independence, and community connection.
Way to go, team! We will continue to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter all year long.
